After a pleasant evening and overnight stop in Dolgellau, we set out on a beautiful sunny morning to the start of the southern route to Cadair Idris – The Minffordd path. A dusting of snow had fallen the afternoon before and highlighted all the gullies on the hills.
The initial part of the path climbs through birch woods and passes a waterfall before it opens out onto the hillside. As we climbed we the path was a little icy to the Cwm of Lyn Cau, which was in the shade. The Lyn (lake) was stunning with a backdrop of the snow dusted cliffs of the ridge. From the Cwm a short-sharp climb to get onto the ridge which circles round to the summit and it’s shelter – not needed on this occasion as the sun was shining and hardly any breeze.
From the summit we continued round the ridge to the East and back down in a horseshoe, eventually joining with the ascent path just above the woods.
Down to the café for tea and cake before driving home.
